MESSAGE FROM BILL GENTRY
(FOUNDER OF COLORS OF CAMBODIA)
The staff and I at Colors of Cambodia appreciate the efforts of everyone in Kuala Lumpur who helped make possible this event to support our small, but unique venture.
Art is important because it helps develop creativity and imagination. To enable a child to play at creating, in essence, creates in that child the possibility of hope, curiosity and love for the world, in his or her heart and mind. The world is always in need of more ideas and more great creations, and I believe the seed of that possibility within a person starts when young, when the mind is growing.
As a child, I spent hour after hour, day after day, with drawing pad and crayons, reviewing life and creating my own worlds. My future, and my potential, were created then. The Colors of Cambodia project is an attempt to give to children in Cambodia this same opportunity… an hour or two or more every week, playing with art, letting the possibilities grow inside them, if they may.
Sure, there is more to the Colors of Cambodia than this. We teach skills that can develop into careers. We help build confidence and character in young people, and we in a way offer a door for the kids to the outside world, showing them others elsewhere know and care.
The culture and history of Cambodia is long and with splendor. The archeological and artistic accomplishments there are world renowned. The potential for future greatness in Cambodia exists. It is confirmed in the eyes and smiles of the young, and when I see the innate creative abilities of the children. (It must be in their blood!). The Colors of Cambodia project is our small way of trying to help the people of Cambodia, especially the children, rediscover art, optimism and their potential for greatness.
